Avoid FTC Fines.. the Count Down to DEC 1

We have till December 1, 2009 to make sure our pages and advertising messages
meet the new FTC guidelines.

If you missed my article last week, about how the pendulum swings in the internet
marketing industry, just as it does in others.. Catch up

First off.. you may want to read the new guidelines for yourself at the FTC site 
re: Endorsements and Testimonials

Basically, you are probably better off just not using testimonials..  But if you do,
you have to declare that any positive results of using
your product/ service, is not
typical for the average client/ consumer.

Which is probably true..  when you take into consideration, that the average client
never uses or applies the product or material as intended
or instructed. So, naturally..
average results are less than desired.


Bloggers and Affiliates Beware.. The FTC is after your $$

Blogging has become the medium of choice for branding purposes, and "YOU"
marketing. Most of us monetize our blogs with affiliate product sales; by way of
Reviews and banners placed on our blogs.

New FTC guidelines targeting bloggers and affiliates require that you disclose if
you are compensated whether it was a payment or free product to make your review.
You can be FINED $11,000 a pop
if you are found to be in violation.



As for the Google Slap Fest.. 

Affiliate marketers are taking the hardest blows here.  95% of affiliates are relatively
new to the internet, and know little if any html.  So it is common for them to use
program provided capture and landing pages...

Due to recent changes made at Google; if your page is the same as any/ every other.. 
you lose.  Your page is likely to never be seen, especially if there is an optin form on
it.  Google doesn't like optins in organic search or adwords.


The solution..

You need to make sure your page is not a capture page..and that it has UNIQUE content.
You will need to break down and build your own personalized page...

Add can your own video/ your own picture...  doesn't have to be long. Keep everything
relevent
and above the fold. Instead of an optin, add 3 buttons to more relevent content.

Actually, this is a perfect opportunity to fine tune your targeting..


EXAMPLE 

Say you are promoting a weight-loss product or MLM company.

Your page can have your headline,  (a VERY STRONG, stop them in their tracks headline),
and your short video... focused on relevent information. (This is a good place to include
lifestyle visuals without making income claims.)

Then instead of an optin... ASK your visitors a question and list 3 benefits as multiple
choice answers in the form of clickable buttons or text links, such as:


What is your primary concern?

     1.  Losing 20 pounds or more
     2.  Increasing Energy
     3.  Financial Freedom

Link your 3 buttons/links to it's own landing page; with your optin form. Then follow up
with each group with more relevent content based on their primary interest, and backend
with your other benefits...

You will be building 3 lists this way, but all 3 will lead to Rome.


As stated last week...  The new guidelines, and the need to generate your own pages,
will reduce your competition. The majority will never take the time or trouble to learn
new skills, or make the necessary changes. Most will simply blow off the idea of internet
marketing all together.

But, for those that are committed to making the internet work for them, true entrepreneurs
will recognize this as a golden opportunity.

and get it done by Dec 1.


1. Clearly Define Your Goals...  (Recommended reading: 1st Things 1st)
2. Brand Yourself Accordingly  
3. Personalize Your Pages
4. Learn How to Generate Traffic
5. Learn How to Build Your List
6. Build Relationships with your List
7. then.. Learn How to Manage and Protect Your Wealth


We will delve into each of these in future issues.. My goal is to help you make needed
changes as quickly and painlessly as possible.

Big Boy Marketing, Step 2 -  Brand Yourself

Assuming you are clear on your goals and ready to share YOU with the world.. let's
move on to step 2... Branding yourself,  also known as "My Story Marketing".  

You can certainly leverage the success stories of others... but the most $$ will be made
when you start branding yourself as the leader. Create your story and get it out to the
world.

There is a ton of training available to help you become proficient at self branding. The
main thing is to stay true to who you are and what you represent and want to contribute...  
your purpose, and your personality.

Instead of just marketing products.. market yourself as an authority and a trusted resource.
Under the YOU umbrella, you can market your favorite programs/ products and services.


Think about The Big Boy's...  

IE: 
The Magic of
Macy's .. we shop here for brand names.
Walmart, Save More Live Better .. we shop here to pay less.
Home Depot, Save More, Do More  .. and we shop here to do it ourselves.


They don't just promote handbags or screwdrivers. They promote themselves just as you
should be promoting yourself, and branding yourself with your own tagline.

Affiliate Programs come and go, MLM's rise and fall, and your own interests and
expertise will change and evolve over time. Under your YOU umbrella, you can evolve
and change your focus... and so can the products, companies and services that you promote.


Blogs and Social Media Sites have become the medium of choice for this
purpose...  and you can use them all pretty much free, sending traffic back to your main
site or affiliate sites.


Before you go out and spend precious dollars on blogging software.. know that there are
many free blogging sites, like blogger.com.  Free is free, however...  If you use a free
blogging site, you have no control over their policys or even life expectancy.  You can
put a lot of time and work into a blog, hosted on a free site; only to have it dissappear
over night.

The best way, (and still free), is to login to the cpanel of your own domain and set up
your wordpress blog (which is very user friendly, with tons of bells and whistles).  

From your cpanel  simply scroll down and find the little smiley face icon for Fantastico.  
Click on that and then find the link to Wordpress, in the left hand column. Click on that
and follow the instructions to install. Easy beezie.

Don't already have a domain/ hosting?  You should, if you are at all serious about
marketing any business online, even affiliate products. For a blog.. use your own name:
EXAMPLE: rhondahailey.com   and brand yourself with your own tagline.  



Domains and Hosting are cheap.  
Domains are 8-10 bucks/ year and hosting is usually around 10-15/mo.  You can have
as many as you need or want and have the time to promote.  (I use godaddy for names,
and hostgator for hosting.)

For super in-depth training on branding, I highly recommend Mike Dillard's Traffic 2.0
course. His video course teaches you the whys and how's of YOU marketing, but he refers
to your blog as your HUB, or nerve center. Excellent training; I'm still in the middle of
it myself; and can tell you it is all meat.

If you are working on a limited budget.. You can find lots of free tutorials online, to help
you get started.  For example: http://www.webdesignbooth.com  has lots of wordpress
and even twitter tutorials.
